ABOUT THE PROGRAM

We are in an information age and computers today play a key role in every aspect of our daily lives. In all production and service sectors as well as government organizations, the use of computers increases productivity and quality, support growth, and provide positive contributions in all aspects.

Computer engineering field is a rapidly expanding field where new subjects and advancements become old within a few years. The program is designed to follow the advancements in the field world wide. While the foundation of the field is given to students, the curriculum and the course contents are updated regularly to reflect the recent advancements. With this approach, students acquire skills to solve problems faced in industrial and service sectors in creative and innovative ways.

Computer engineering Master of Science programs was established in 2004-2005 academic year. The main purpose of this program is to equip students with skills to understand universal computer engineering problems with a wide view, in depth and intelligently to analyze and solve them with new synthesiz, methods, tools, and processes.

The program is designed to follow the scientific and technological advancements while taking into consideration our country’s requirements to provide a universal level of education. The time to complete Master of Science program is six years with the non-thesis option.

The education in Master of Science program is in Turkish.

 

MISSION

The mission of Computer Engineering Department at Maltepe University is to equip students well with information sciences subjects for them to be able to compete with their peers working at national and international organizations.

VISION

The vision of Computer Engineering Department at Maltepe University is to present our students with the fundamental principles and advanced knowledge in computer engineering for them to become leaders in their fields who can shape the future.

ACQUIRED DEGREE

Students who successfully complete the program receive Master of Science in Computer Engineering degree.

ACQUIRED LEVEL OF QUALIFICATION

This is a graduate level program for Master of Science degree in Computer Engineering.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

 

It is essential for the candidates of graduate programs:

·         To hold an undergraduate diploma

·         To have a grade of at least 45 on ALES (Academic Personnel and Graduate Education Entrance Exam) 450 on GMAT, which is an internationally accredited exam, or 610 on “quantitative” part of GRE exam.

·         To meet the requirements determined by the head of department and to have taken the language proficiency exam given by the institution unless the candidate has a certificate of KPDS/UDS or any other exams accredited by YOK ( Turkish Higher Education Institution )

·         To be successful in the interview/ aptitude test

·         To have a reference letter, a statement of purpose showing the reason for applying for the graduate program and competence in written and oral Turkish and/or foreign language skills

·         Exchange student applications are to be done in accordance with the admission requirements of the agreement signed between Maltepe University and the partner university.

·         Special students can take the courses approved by the head of the related department

RULES AND REGULATIONS OF THE PROGRAM

 

Students registered in a Master’s program without thesis:

·         Are required to take 12 courses (36 local credits) and enroll in the Graduation Project Course, and complete 120 ECTS. (The Graduation Project Course do not have local credit and are assessed with a pass or fail).

·         Are required to get at least DD grade in order to be successful in a course in their program.

·         Are required to have 2.50 general average grades out of 4.00 on the core subjects, and are to be successful in the Graduate Project course.

DESCRIPTION OF PRIOR KNOWLEDGE

A student who is currently enrolled in a Master's Degree program in the same discipline at another institution and has successfully completed at least one semester, upon submitting all required documents before the deadline, may transfer to the Master's Program at Maltepe University upon the recommendation of the department administration and with the approval of the Administrative Committee of the Graduate School of Social Sciences. The decision taken will also include eligibility for exemption from some course requirements of the graduate program. Students who transfer from anotheruniversity must be successful in the Maltepe University English Proficiency Exam or in an equivalent English examination.

Graduates from other disciplines are accepted to the program provided they take undergraduate courses to make them ready to take graduate courses.   Recognition of prior non-formal and in-formal learning will also be considered although rules and regulations are not yet adequately developed in Turkish Higher Education System.

PROGRAM DEFINITION

Computer engineers define and solve computer engineering problems using their knowledge in hardware and software. Today, computers have become an integral part of our daily lives. While advances in the technology expand the use of computers, the number of problems that need to be satisfactorily addressed increases as well. The objective of the Computer Engineering Department at Maltepe University is to educate the students with the theoric foundation of hardware and software subjects and teach them how to utilize this foundation to solve real life problems

PROFESSIONAL PROFILE OF GRADUATES

 

The graduates of the Master of Science in Computer Engineering program have a complete knowledge of the existing theoretical and substantive academic literature and they are committed to lifelong learning. The graduates of the program find employment in both government and private sector organizations with IT departments or operations or they start their own company.

 

TRANSFER TO A HIGHER STAGE

 

The students who graduated from the program may apply to study in Ph.D. programs (third cycle) in the same field or other fields.

 

PROGRAM STRUCTURE

 

The Master’s Program without thesis option has compulsory project and 12 courses, 4 of which are compulsory and 8 elective adding up to 36 local credits and 120 ECTS; The Project is 30 ECTS credits. 

EXAMS, EVALUATION AND GRADING

 

Exams

 

Students take at least one quiz, one mid-term or a project and an end of term exam whose number is determined by the instructor.

 

Students are informed beforehand about the mid-term exam dates and the subjects that the students will be responsible for. The numbers and dates of mid-term exams are announced by the instructor at the beginning of the semester. Mid-terms are given during the pre-determined hours for that course. Excuses of those students who have not taken the mid-term exam or taken part in studies are evaluated by the instructor, and the procedure is determined by the board of management of the institute.

 

In end of term exams, student’s knowledge and performance in that semester is tested, and they are extremely significant in evaluation of student’s success. To what extent this exam affects the student’s success is determined by the instructor and is announced at the beginning of the term. Starting and finishing dates of end of term exams are determined by senate and can be seen in academic calendar published at the beginning of the term.

 

Excuses of those students who have not taken the mid-term exam are evaluated by the board management of institute. Providing that the documents proving the excuses are admitted, excuse exam dates are announced.

 

Evaluation and Grading

 

Instructors evaluate each registered student by taking quiz, mid-term exam and final exam results, and the studies that substitute exams into consideration. As a result of the evaluation, s/he appreciates one of the grades below as the student's final grade.

AA, BA, BB, CB and CC mean that the course has been completed successfully. DC and DD grades show that the course has been completed successfully providing that the student has fulfilled the requirements depending on grade average point which was specified in the regulations. Grade F shows that the student has been unsuccessful. Even if the grade average point of a student who has got an F grade is enough to be considered as successful, this course is retaken. The letter grades specified above are based on evaluations of midterm and final exams and papers written by the students. Final grades are given on the basis of normal distribution of scores in the class. However, these letter grades are considered to correspond to the following intervals out of a hundred: AA 90-100; BA 85-89; BB 80-84; CB 75-79; CC 70-74; DC 60-69; DD 50-59; F 49 and below.

 

Special condition of students in a course is shown with the letters below:

EK   (incomplete)

In a condition of incompleteness resulting from the student, the instructor takes valid excuses into consideration and wants that student to compensate those imperfections. Providing that the imperfections are not compensated maximum in two weeks after passing grades are announced, the mark of incomplete, changes to an F grade.

Successful Students

 

Students are regarded as successful according to their General Average Grade. In order to be graduated as successful, students have to have 2.50 General Average Grade in a Master's program.

 

Students who graduate from their departments or complete their programs with 3.50-4.00 General Average Grade are appreciated as University high honor students and they are on the list of University Honor Students List.
