EXAM REGULATIONS, ASSESSMENT AND GRADING

Exams

For each course, instructors assign the students for taking quiz, minimum one mid-term exam/similar research preparation, and one final exam.

Mid terms are pre announced examinations with their coverage fields and dates. In the beginning of the semester, the number of mid term examinations are announced by the instructor to the students. Mid terms are held during the class hours. In case of a student misses her mid-term exam, the instructor is assigned to evaluate her excuse and the process after is to be assigned by the Institute’s Directory Board.

Final examinations are evaluating the student’s full performance and knowledge during the semester and obtaining an important value in final evaluations. The ınstructor is assigned to determine the influence of the Final exam within the total grade and to announce this at the beginning of the semester. The Senate determines the Final Examination period and announces it with the Academic Calendar at the beginning of the semester.

The Institute Directory Board evaluates excuses of the students that missed the Final Exams. If the excuse is proved with convenient reports, Make-Up Exam dates are announced.

DC and DD grades show that the course has been completed successfully providing that the student has fulfilled the requirements depending on grade average point which was specified in the regulations. Grade F shows that the student has been unsuccessful. Even if the grade average point of a student who has got an F grade is enough to be considered as successful, this course is retaken.

Special condition of students in a course is shown with the letters below:

 BI   (successful)

Student has succeeded in a course without credit or in one that is not included in the average.

BZ  (unsuccessful)

Student has been unsuccessful in a course without credit or in one that is not included in the average.

EK   (incomplete)

In a condition of incompleteness resulting from the student, the instructor takes valid excuses into consideration and wants that student to compensate those imperfections. Providing that the imperfections are not compensated maximum in two weeks after passing grades are announced, the mark of incomplete, changes to an F grade.

ÇK  (dropped)

Student has dropped the course.

DZ  (unattended)

Student has not fulfilled attendance requirements. (Absenteeism is regarded as an F grade while the averages are calculated)

MU (exempt)

Student has been exempted according to these regulations.

TK (retaken)

The course has been retaken due to failure.

İZ  (permitted)

Student is permitted according to regulations

TF (transfer)

Equivalent courses which the student took and succeeded in other higher education institutions, in another institute or in the previous program and which have been recognized in the current undergraduate transfer program.

ÖZ

Student has the status of special student.

Grade Averages and the Calculation of Grades

Registrar's Office keeps track of each student YANO (GPA) and GANO (the cumulative GPA) regularly.

YANO (GPA) is a weighted average of all the grades a student receives during a semester.  GANO (Cumulative GPA) is an ongoing weighted average of all the semesters a student has attended all the classes they have taken. This calculation starts after the second semester grades have been announced.

Before the calculation of the weighted grade point average for each course, course credits and the course grade the student received from are multiplied by the numerical equivalent of that course to determine the weight. Then the weight of courses are added, GPA and the cumulative GPA sets are determined separately.

YANO (GPA) is calculated by taking the number of grade points a student earned in a semester divided by the total number of credits taken.

GANO (cumulative GPA) calculation is done by average of a student's grades for all semesters and courses completed up to a given academic term.

While calculating grade averages, the numerical equivalents of the courses students have taken according to Article 56 of Regulation of the School are taken into account. If a class is repeated then the last official grade is taken into account while calculating the (Cumulative GPA) GANO.

Successful Students

Students are regarded as Honor Students according to their General Average Grade. In order to be admitted as Honor, students have to have 3.00 General Average Grade in a Ph.D. program.

Students who graduate from their departments or complete their programs with 3.50-4.00 General Average Grade are appreciated as University high honor students and they are announced on the list of University Honor Students List.
